Sports Series: Tennis

Welcome to a new corner of reflection and inspiration on my personal blog—a space where I share stories that uplift, challenge perceptions, and celebrate resilience.

This sports series explores the incredible ways that sport can transform the lives of people living with rare facial deformities. It’s not just about physical activity; it’s about courage, connection, and the quiet power of continuing to show up—even when the world isn’t always kind.

For many people, sport is simply a way to stay fit or have fun with friends. But for those of us with visible differences—conditions that can sometimes invite unwanted stares or moments of social discomfort—sport offers something deeper. It becomes a space where confidence is rebuilt, resilience is strengthened, and belonging is rediscovered.

Tennis has always been my first love. I started playing at the age of seven and joined my first tennis club in the late 1990s. Since 1999, I’ve proudly represented at club level in Saturday league tennis, enjoying the competition, the camaraderie, and the ever-growing tennis fraternity that has shaped so much of who I am today.

On the court, the focus shifts. It’s no longer about how you look, but how you move, think, react, and persist. Tennis has taught me discipline, grit, and belief in my own ability—lessons that extend far beyond the baseline. Each match played, each rally won or lost, has reinforced that my strength is not defined by appearance, but by effort, heart, and determination.
