Sport Series: Padel

This journey through sport is deeply personal — because it speaks to resilience, hope, and the simple joy of movement, even when health challenges make that difficult.

Just over two years ago, I played my very first padel session. Coming from a strong tennis background, I initially assumed the transition would be seamless. I quickly learned otherwise. While padel shares similarities with tennis, it demands a different rhythm, strategy, and mindset — particularly when it comes to mastering the glass walls and adjusting to the speed and bounce of the ball.

After a few games, I found my footing. Padel is incredibly rewarding and, in many ways, has strengthened my tennis game. I find that you move more continuously on a padel court, relying heavily on reflexes, positioning, and teamwork. Many players agree — padel doesn’t replace tennis, but it complements it beautifully.

Beyond the physical benefits, padel has offered something equally meaningful: community. Like tennis and tenpin bowling, it has introduced me to a new fraternity of friends — people who see me simply as a padel player, not defined by my rare medical condition.

Living with a rare diagnosis can be isolating. Sport provides a counterbalance — moments of control, accomplishment, and pride. Each session becomes a reminder that capability doesn’t disappear in the face of adversity; sometimes, it grows stronger.
